Grumman Closed 1990

This page records the games of the 2nd Annual Grumman Closed Chess Championship.  This year's field consisted of eight players, down from last year's ten. However, the average rating increased, to just over 1860.  There were no undefeated players in this year's tournament. However, there was one player who did not win a single game, six of his seven games ending in draws. Draws tended to characterize this tournament to a greater degree than last year.  My draw against Robert Rizzo was the longest game of the tournament (at 67 moves) and Peter Cullen's draw against Keith Rodriguez was the shortest (at 18).  Jerry DeCarlo (1704) scored the biggest upset win of the tournament against Tom Victory (2005) with a difference of 301 points, and I was close behind with the second largest upset win over George Berg.  And that despite the fact that his rating was almost one hundred points higher than last year (now 2093) while mine increased nearly two hundred and fifty points (now 1796), for a difference of 297.  Jerry DeCarlo had the largest upset draw against George, at a ratings difference of 389 (last year I had the upset draw against George with a 440 point difference).  However, these setbacks were not enough to stop Mr. Berg, who won first place in the Grumman Closed Championship for the second year in a row.

Despite the fact that I did not place in the winner's circle this year, I did partake in the game awarded the Player's Choice Prize, though I was on the losing side.  This was my Round 3 effort against Keith Rodriguez.

This was, as last year, a most enjoyable tournament.
