Grumman Closed 1989

The following games were played in the 1989 Grumman Closed Chess Tournament.  This was an invitational tournament, so that it could be USCF rated.  It was one of my better tournaments. Though my rating was fairly low when I entered, I came in second place among a fairly strong field.

I did particularly well against the top seeded players.  In round six I sacrificed repeatedly against the third seeded player. In round two I played an excellent end game against the second seeded player.  both of these games were upset wind for me, with ratings differences of 293 and 387 points respectively.  But my best game was the eighth round draw against the top seeded and eventual tournament winner.  This game was very involved, and for a while it looked as if there were going to be four queens on the board.  We agreed to a draw, though later analysis showed I should have continued on for a win.  This upset draw was against a player rated 440 points higher than me.  Though I would have preferred to win, I was very happy to have done as well as a draw.

This page contains all the games from the tournament, not just the games I played in.

The games can be played from this site using a PGN viewer known as Palview.  Just click on the links on the left hand side of this screen to check out the games in each round.
